The midi files you download are based on the general midi standard.
General Midi was introduced (ages ago) to allow instruments to share basic instruments on the same program numbers, so for example a program change that produces a piano on one instrument would not play a flute on another.
General Midi instruments may have a GM bank dedicated to this functionality but also carry other instruments in other banks that do not comply with the above.
A GM file has a header that sends a 'GM reset' to the instrument which would normally cause it to use the GM bank scheme and program numbers.
MODX+ understands this command, however it tries to choose matching GM instruments from its normal bank of performances. Sometimes this may not work very well.
You can however select better instruments by hand: use your daw's capability to edit messages and remove the GM init header. Then adjust your MODX+ patches yourself.
