I think the Genos has one of these too.I think it makes sense. It is cheaper for Yamaha. It makes it easier to replace for Montage owners if there is a problem with it at some point. And I guess the quality of these external power supply units is good enough.
As long as it is good quality it is actually a good design choice, for the reasons you mentioned. I don't consider this a problem.
It is also well mounted with a screwed cage.
Unlike Korg (Kronos?) where it's mounted with zip ties
