For clarification: The MIDI DIN in/out ports do something when MIDI-over-USB is enabled. They act as a MIDI interface. That means the USB host (computer) can send messages over USB that will be coming out of the MIDI DIN out port, and the USB host can receive the messages that are coming in to the MIDI DIN in port.
In combination with a MIDI router on the USB host (e.g. MainStage), this might be sufficient to control sound modules that are connected to the Montage MIDI DIN out. However, it does not work for the OP's question (redundant MIDI paths).
