Electric Guitar, Amps & Effects • Yamaha SG-200 Made in Taiwan – July 1987? Strange Late Model

Hey everyone,

I have a Yamaha SG-200 that’s a bit unusual. From what I know, SG-200 guitars were only made between 1983 and 1984. But mine says Made in Taiwan with a serial number NN18014, which means it was made on July 18, 1987.

Here’s what’s interesting:

It looks and feels almost exactly like a regular SG-200 from the early ‘80s — same body, neck, electronics.

The Yamaha logo on the headstock is a little higher than usual, and the little flower inlay is smaller and a bit shifted.

The neck heel and body shape match the original SG-200 perfectly.

It’s quite heavy — around 4.2 kg, which is more than my black Yamaha SBG200 from 1984 that weighs about 3.6 kg.

The neck on the white one feels stiffer and the body edges are sharper, unlike the smoother black SBG200.

Also, the tuning machines (tuners) on the white SG-200 are different from those on my black SBG200.

I can’t find anything about a 1987 SG-200 made in Taiwan anywhere — no catalogs or info online.

Has anyone seen or heard about a late SG-200 like this? Could it be a special Taiwan-only run or maybe built from leftover parts?

Would love to hear your thoughts! I can share photos if it helps.

Thanks a lot!
